BULAKAN, Bulacan–Anton Luis Reyes Catindig, a young man born with Symbrachydactyly, has carved a unique path in the world of media. His short fingers haven’t held him back from pursuing his passion for layout design, a passion that has taken him from the pages of his family’s weekly newspaper, NEWSCORE, to the podium of National University (NU) Baliwag.
Catindig’s journey is an inspiring testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of embracing one’s strengths. He is a Registered Criminologist but a deep-seated love for journalism and a desire to honor his family’s legacy in media led him to become the managing editor and layout artist for NEWSCORE.
In December 2024, Catindig first shared his expertise with aspiring journalists at Bulacan State University, conducting a seminar on layout design for the Dambana Publication and the Society of English Educators. This was just the beginning of his journey as a mentor and inspiration to the young generation of journalists.
Fast forward to February 5, 2025, Catindig found himself back on a stage, this time at National University Baliwag, as guest speaker for the “Likhayag” journalism seminar and workshop. This four-day event marked a significant milestone for NU Baliwag, as it aimed to establish its own student-run campus newspaper.
Catindig, along with his mother, Carmela Reyes-Estrope, the editor-in-chief of NEWSCORE and a correspondent for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, provided valuable insights to the student participants. Estrope, a journalist, delved into the world of media and journalism, covering topics such as basic news writing, ethics, particularly responsibility and accountability.
Catindig, with his deep understanding of layout design, focused on the practical aspects of newspaper production. He shared the basic steps of layouting using InDesign 2018, showcasing his mastery of the software and the art of visual storytelling. He even highlighted the unique and celebrated design of the NEWSCORE masthead, a testament to his skills and creativity.
“I’m not going to brag about our masthead (NEWSCORE),” he said,” but whenever we had an event in Manila and in other places, they always said that the NEWSCORE masthead is beautiful and elegant among mastheads in the Philippines.”
Alongside Catindig and Estrope, other seasoned professionals from the Bulacan Provincial Public Affairs Office (PPAO) offered their expertise. Pauline Bantigue, Information Officer II, provided insights into the role of local government media, while Penafrancia Calderon-Capco, External Affairs Division Head, emphasized the importance of proofreading techniques.
The “Likhayag” workshop, spearheaded by the English Language Studies program at NU Baliwag, saw the participation of over 20 students from both college and senior high school. It’s a testament to the university’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of journalists.
Catindig’s story and journey is a reminder that true passion knows no boundaries.
