On March 19, De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Center for Energy, Ecology and Development (CEED) in committing to join and promote the 10 Million Solar Rooftops Challenge.

In July of 2024, the 10 Million Solar Rooftops Challenge was launched with the goal of putting up ten (10) million solar rooftop PV systems across the Philippines through multi-sectoral advocacy and cooperation. CEED served as one of the co-convenors of the initiative.

DLSL becomes the latest of many to join the challenge. The Challenge has previously been championed by multi-sectoral groups and environmental champions, including the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

Representing 10 Million Solar Rooftop Challenge, CEED Deputy Executive Director Avril De Torres said, “This partnership with DLSL is exciting. With this challenge, we see how many are willing to welcome renewable energy. This challenge is for and by every Filipino—DLSL is one of the many examples of this.”

“We are excited to join the 10 Million Solar Rooftop Challenge. It is clear that education will play a huge role in the democratization of energy. For renewable energy to be integrated in society, effort needs to come from schools like us to help people understand that it is possible,” Dr. Merlin Teodosia C. Suarez said.

DLSL’s home province of Batangas is an epicenter of increasing fossil fuel developments in the country, despite the massive potential for renewable energy. With momentum building up, the 10 Million Solar Rooftops Challenge aims to contribute to the transition to clean and reliable energy from renewables in the Philippines.
