BULAKAN, Bulakan—The town’s long time Maundy Thursday night “dakip” tradition lives on.
Residents in Barangay Maysantol, Tibig watch and command this “faithful” who immortalizes Jesus Christ when he was about to be crucified in this year’s Roman Catholic Lenten Season.
Barangay Tibig has been a major site of the annual Maundy Thursday evening dakip where residents, faithfuls and devotees as a form of penance, deliver themselves to be punished, whipped by a group of people who act like the Roman soldiers during the crucifixion of Christ.
The Roman soldier actors are friends and relatives of the devotees doing the dakip.
However, during this modern days, the one in penance is no longer being strongly kicked by Roman soldier actors which has been the practice for several decades but is pulled until he fell and lie down to the grounds through a string tied to the wooden cross he carries.
In addition, this year’s volunteers for dakip are already the new breed of faithfuls and devotees. Previous year’s subject of dakip are today’s master of the penance or the leaders of the Roman soldier actors.
Bulakan, the old capital of the province of Bulacan is among its towns and cities with the richest history, heritage, culture and religious practices, beliefs and traditions.
