ORANI, Bataan–The Philippine Press Institute (PPI) led the ten Media-Citizen Councils in the Philippines in this year’s observance of the World Press Freedom Day through virtual activities with the theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World, the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Press Freedom and the Media,” highlighting the evolving landscape of journalism in an age of rapid technological advancements.
In a statement, the PPI emphasized the paramount importance of truthfulness and accuracy in journalism, especially during election periods when disinformation runs rampant. “At the core of ethical journalism lies the unwavering commitment to truthfulness and accuracy,” the statement reads. “Especially during elections when disinformation spreads like wildfire, the responsibility of journalists to verify facts rigorously is more crucial than ever. The duty to present truthful, unbiased information is not just a professional obligation but a moral imperative.”
This call for journalistic integrity resonates amidst the increasing presence of AI-generated content, which has raised concerns about misinformation and the potential erosion of public trust in media. Journalists face the challenge of navigating this “brave new world” with vigilance, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the information they present.
Beyond the challenges posed by AI, the safety and security of journalists remain a crucial concern. The tragic killing of prominent media figure and former mayor of Kalibo, Aklan, Johnny Dayang, at the age of 89, serves as a stark reminder of the risks journalists face, even in retirement.
The PPI also condemns this heinous act, stating, “This heinous act sends a chilling message to the press: that no one is safe, not even the elderly, not even those who have long retired from the daily grind of media work.”
Under the leadership of Carmela Reyes Estrope, the Central Luzon Media-Citizen Council (CLMCC), one of ten existing Media Councils in the Philippines, joined the virtual celebration while at cuddles of the tranquil and beauty of nature in “The Hills in Barangay Tala, in this town.
The Media Councils, along with individual journalists, stand as champions of truth and integrity. Their participation in World Press Freedom Day events underscores their commitment to protecting the rights of journalists and citizens alike, ensuring that facts and truths prevail. The fight for press freedom, amidst the challenges of AI and violence, is a continuous endeavor, demanding unwavering dedication to the principles of truth, accuracy, and safety for all.
