BALER, Aurora (PIA) — Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across Aurora are set to upgrade their product lines following a three-day product development activity spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

A total of 10 MSMEs and cooperatives participated in consultations and assessments focused on non-food innovations using coconut-derived materials.

DTI Aurora Senior Trade-Industry Development Specialist Bryan Sardea said the activity is part of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP) Product Development Cycle, which aims to improve the productivity and income of the coconut industry.

“This marks the first phase of the CFIDP product development series. Our goal is to generate design concepts that align with both local and international market demands using coconut-based and indigenous materials,” he added.

The Design Center of the Philippines (DCP), a DTI-attached agency, assessed each enterprise’s current product line, available raw materials, technical capacity and design potential.

MSMEs were encouraged to combine coco shells with native materials like driftwood, bamboo and abaca fiber.

They also explored enhancements through carving, hand-painting and nature-inspired designs.

“This initiative strengthens Aurora’s position in the non-food coconut sector by equipping local enterprises and Shared Service Facility projects with market-ready innovations that support coconut farming communities,” Sardea furthered.

Participants are expected to produce at least three prototypes based on approved designs to be featured in upcoming trade events including the Siempre Aurora Trade Fair and CFIDP Creative Showcase.

Meanwhile, preparations are ongoing for the Siempre Aurora Trade and Food Fair and Creatives Showcase set for July 17 to 20, 2025 at Marquee Mall in Angeles City.

About 40 MSMEs will present a range of products from sectors such as coconut, cacao, processed fruits and nuts, wearables and home décor.

The province’s creative industries will also be featured through visual art, sculpture, digital media, handcrafted items and original music by local artists. (CLJD/MAT, PIA Region 3-Aurora)
