The Philippines is on the brink of a sustainable transportation revolution, and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines or EVAP is leading the charge. Through policy advocacy, industry collaboration, and public awareness campaigns, EVAP is making significant strides in accelerating electric vehicle adoption across the country.

EVAP has been actively working with government agencies such as the Department of Energy, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Land Transportation Office to create policies that encourage EV adoption. The passage of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act or EVIDA in 2022 was a major milestone, providing tax incentives, mandating EV charging stations in establishments, and setting fleet conversion targets for public and private sectors.

EVAP President Edmund Araga emphasized the importance of these policy developments. “Our advocacy has always been clear. We need a strong policy framework that incentivizes EV adoption and supports the local EV industry. With EVIDA in place, we are now seeing the government, private sector, and consumers working together to make EVs the new normal in Philippine transportation.”

EVAP is also collaborating with the Bureau of Philippine Standards to ensure safety and quality regulations for EVs and charging infrastructure. Standardizing battery technology, charging connectors, and safety protocols will be key to a seamless transition to electric mobility.

One of the biggest challenges in EV adoption is charging infrastructure. To address this, EVAP has been working with energy providers, mall operators, real estate developers, and local government units to expand the EV charging network nationwide. Metro Manila alone now has over 100 charging stations, with more being installed in Cebu and Davao.

Araga pointed out the importance of infrastructure growth. “A robust charging infrastructure is crucial to build consumer confidence in EVs. That is why we are continuously engaging with both the private sector and the government to accelerate the rollout of charging stations.”

The shift to EVs is gaining momentum, with increasing consumer interest and rising sales figures. According to the Department of Trade and Industry, the number of registered EVs in the Philippines grew by 45 percent in 2024, with more automakers launching electric cars, e-motorcycles, and electric public transport vehicles. Brands like Nissan, BYD, and Hyundai are leading the market, while transport cooperatives are transitioning to electric jeepneys under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.

Araga acknowledged the positive changes in the transport sector. “We are seeing more transport groups embrace electric jeepneys, thanks to government support and the growing awareness of the cost savings and environmental benefits of going electric.”

Despite the progress, EVAP remains committed to addressing challenges in EV adoption. The association continues to push for localized manufacturing of EV components, workforce training through TESDA EV programs, and stronger LGU engagement to promote EV-friendly policies.

Araga concluded with optimism. “The future of Philippine mobility is electric. With sustained government support, industry cooperation, and consumer awareness, we can make EV adoption a reality for all Filipinos
