Luzon and Metro Manila-based journalists commemorated on Saturday the 10th year anniversary of the Mamasapano incident, exactly on the day and the place where it happened on January 25, 2015. They offered wreath and prayers in the middle of a cornfield in Barangay Tukanalipao, Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur, where 44 members of the Special Action Force of the Philippine National Police (PNP) were killed in a heavy exchange of fires with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) troops. The infamous incident was called the “Mamasapano 44” after 44 SAF members who were on a mission against Indonesian bomb expert Zulkifli bin Hir, aka Marwan, and Abdul Basit Usman, were killed. But authorities lament that the incident was indeed, “Mamasapano 66” because there were 17 MILF fighters and 5 civilians who were also killed in that encounter. Photo by Carmela Reyes-Estrope
