
CALUMPIT, Bulacan—A tricycle driver and a passenger were killed after their vehicle was smashed by a speeding modern bus-type passenger jeep along Barangay Iba O’Este, MacArthur highway in this town on Tuesday.
Shortly after, a Carmexss marked modern passenger jeep driven by Orlando Manayag Jr., 53, from Sto. Tomas, Pampanga collided head-on with the tricycle, it fell off a cliff on the left side of the highway and caused injuries to all its 19 passengers.
The tricycle was a total wreck.
Calumpit municipal disaster risk reduction management office (MDRRMO) team leader Albert Mailig identified the killed tricycle driver as Johny Reyes, 44, from Barangay Cainogan this town, while the woman victim remains unidentified.
Mailig told NEWSCORE that the woman victim was declared dead on arrival at Calumpit District Hospital while Reyes expired while trying to be revived in another hospital he was rushed to.
They were traversing the south bound lane of the MacArthur highway at around 2:00 pm when the modern passenger jeep on the opposite lane from Malolos City bound to San Fernando City in Pampanga suddenly collided head-on and smashed their vehicle.
According to Calumpit police, the injured passengers were brought to Bulacan Medical Center in City of Malolos including the arrested and handcuffed jeepney driver.
Jhen Mark Eleogo, 19, a student of Bulacan State University and one of the injured passengers of the passenger jeep told NEWSCORE that they were travelling at a high speed since they left Malolos area. Suddenly, upon reaching Iba O’Este and shortly before their vehicle hit the tricycle, the driver of the jeepney shouted and alerted them that the vehicle had lost its brake.
Eleogo has just come from the university and was bound home to their house in Barangay San Jose.
