CITY OF MALOLOS– A wave of emotion swept through this historic town, now City of Malolos on January 23 , as Bulakenyos gathered at the grounds of the Barasoain Church to commemorate the 126th anniversary of the First Philippine Republic. The event, a testament to the nation’s enduring spirit, was marked by powerful pronouncements from key figures, moments of quiet reflection, and a deeply moving act of remembrance, which set the tone for the day.

As the ceremony began, the crowd, united in their reverence for the Philippine Republic, joined in a chorus of “Ang Bayan Ko” while laying flowers at the monument of Emilio Aguinaldo, then president of the First Philippine Republic government.  The melody, sung with emotion, filled the church grounds as Filipinos paid tribute to their hero. The act of remembrance was followed by a resounding 21-gun salute, a gesture of respect and honor for the sacrifices made by those who fought for the nation’s freedom.

The event was particularly poignant as Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra, a respected legal expert and former Secretary of the Department of Justice, delivered a powerful speech that focused on the enduring legacy of the Malolos Constitution Congress, the Malolos Constitution and the First Philippine Republic.

“The Malolos Constitution was a crucial document,” Guevarra stated. “It was a seed for the future constitutions of our nation. It showed the Filipino people’s determination to shape their own destiny.”

Guevarra emphasized that the Malolos Constitution was not just a historical artifact; it was a living document that continues to inform and inspire Filipino governance. He highlighted the constitution’s influence on the development of subsequent Filipino constitutions, from the 1935 Commonwealth Constitution to the 1987 Constitution, which is currently in effect.

“The Malolos Constitution laid the groundwork for a democratic system, enshrined fundamental rights for Filipinos, and set the stage for our nation’s journey towards self-determination,” Guevarra declared.

But he stressed that despite the challenges the Philippine Republic faced, including the loss of international recognition and the eventual American colonization, the legacy of its constitutional framework remains strong.

“The Malolos Constitution serves as a constant reminder of our commitment to democracy, human rights, and self-governance,” Guevarra emphasized. “It is a document that we must continue to draw inspiration from as we navigate the challenges of the present and build a brighter future for our nation.”

Other notable speakers, including Governor Daniel R. Fernando and City of Malolos Mayor Christian D. Natividad, also emphasized the significance of the Philippine Republic, highlighting the sacrifices made by its leaders and the enduring fight for freedom and justice. They stressed the need for a united and empowered citizenry and the importance of choosing leaders who embody the values of service and integrity.

The event concluded with a powerful reminder that the fight for a truly just and prosperous nation continues today. The spirit of those who dared to dream of a nation free from oppression and guided by principles of democracy and human rights must continue to inspire us. The legacy of the First Republic, born in the heart of Bulacan, is not merely a story of the past, but a vibrant legacy that demands action, commitment, and a steadfast belief in the power of the Filipino people to shape a brighter future. As Filipinos face contemporary challenges, the lessons of the Philippine Republic’s history continue to guide the path towards a society with just and equality.
