Sometimes , they have to be validated abroad . Indeed , no prophet is revered in one’s homeland .

The Filipino people are known for their resilience, hard work, and creativity. They have overcome many challenges and hardships in their history, and have always strived to achieve their dreams and aspirations. Whether in the fields of science, arts, sports, business, or public service, Filipinos have made remarkable contributions and achievements that have inspired and benefited many people around the world.

One example of a Filipino who has made history is May Parsons, a Filipino-British nurse who administered the world’s first Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine shot to a 90-year-old woman in the UK[^1^][1]. Parsons has been working as a nurse for 24 years and is one of the thousands of Filipinos who serve in the UK’s National Health Service. She said that she was proud to be able to contribute to the positive step toward stopping the pandemic and to represent the Filipinos in the global fight against COVID-19[^2^][2].

Another example of a Filipino who has achieved success is Vico Sotto, the young mayor of Pasig City who has been lauded for his effective and innovative responses to the COVID-19 crisis. Sotto deployed disinfection drones, mobile markets, bike lanes, and free shuttle services to help his constituents cope with the lockdowns and prevent the spread of the virus[^3^][3]. He also supported the government employees in Pasig by providing them with hazard pay, laptops, and internet allowances[^4^][4]. Sotto has been recognized as one of the world’s outstanding leaders by various international organizations and publications.

A third example of a Filipino who has created success is Tony Tan Caktiong, the founder and chairman of Jollibee, the largest fast-food chain in the Philippines and one of the fastest-growing in the world. Tan Caktiong started his business with a small ice cream parlor in 1975 and later expanded it into a hamburger joint that catered to the Filipino taste. Today, Jollibee has over 1,400 stores in 35 countries and employs more than 100,000 people. Tan Caktiong has also been involved in various social and philanthropic initiatives that aim to improve the lives of Filipinos, especially the youth and the poor. These are just some of the many examples of Filipinos who have made good and created success around the world. They have shown that with determination, passion, and innovation, Filipinos can overcome any obstacle and achieve any goal. They have also shown that Filipinos are not only successful in their own fields, but also generous and compassionate in sharing their talents and resources with others. They have truly embodied the spirit of bayanihan, or communal unity and cooperation, that is at the heart of Filipino culture.

Family Triumphs Over Challenges

0
Mila Sibayan, 56, a CARD Bank client for 15 years, believes that family support and open communication are the true keys to overcoming challenges and achieving success in life.

Mila Sibayan serves as a beacon of perseverance. At 56, she has faced life’s challenges with firm faith, patience, and determination, supported by her loving family.

Mila is a mother of three boys. Together with her family, they manage a house-renting business and an online food business as their main sources of income. But their path to success was not a walk in the park.

Beforehand, Mila and her husband initially worked tirelessly in various jobs. She took on secretarial duties while her husband, Efren, worked as a technician in a commercial bank. However, their salaries were insufficient to meet their growing family’s needs.

Seeking a better future for their children, they ventured into multiple businesses, including an internet café and a store. Despite their efforts, the demands of running these businesses, their growing financial needs, and their busy schedules eventually led them to seek new ventures.

Mila’s path changed when she worked as an OFW in Saudi Arabia for two years. After returning home, she made a wise decision to focus on their house-renting business and start online food sales. Meanwhile, her husband became a driver for his veterinarian sister.

An important moment arrived when Mila was introduced to CARD Bank, a microfinance-oriented rural bank that offers financial services to socially and economically challenged families. Because of her sister, she became a client of CARD Bank and took out loans to renovate their house rental property, start their food business, and support their family’s needs.

Over 15 years of clientship, Mila emphasized the significant role CARD Bank played in their journey, providing them with financial support, insurance, and the opportunity to save. Her loan has reached up to PHP 60,000, which she solely used for the business and family’s needs.

Through unwavering love, support, and open communication within their family, they overcame every obstacle. All of Mila’s sons are now on their way to their successful paths. Her eldest son is now working in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), one is in Canada with his own family, and the youngest is pursuing a teaching career.

Her advice to other budding entrepreneurs and clients of CARD Bank is to stay positive, manage their loans wisely, and invest in ventures that yield returns. “To other business owners, learn to separate personal to business needs, and practice strong focus on what truly matters,” she said.

Currently, Mila’s businesses continue to thrive. Their house-renting business now caters exclusively to employed individuals, and their food venture, offering bulk food party trays which have satisfied their clients and customers in Makati, BGC, and others. They have even acquired a new house and lot in Laguna.

In the years to come, Mila plans to expand their businesses to cater to more customers and invest more to secure the family’s future.

The Sweet Scent of Success

0
Judy Otero believes that everything is better with a bit of fragrance. From this philosophy, she developed the sweet formula to a perfume brand which is now sold in various locations nationwide.

Amidst the busy streets of Pasay City, a family’s dream to create signature fragrances evolved from humble beginnings into an established brand in 2017 – the Leviste Perfume Collection. It was born out of the perseverance and passion of Judy Otero.

Judy manages the operations and is supported by her three sons, each with distinct roles. Her eldest manages the production, her middle child is in charge of planning, and her youngest helps in marketing. Their intertwined lives and business reflect a close relationship, all essential in the operation of their perfume business.

Alongside her partner, Antonio Leviste, they surpassed life’s trials. When Antonio passed away, Judy was left alone to raise their children. Her business of selling snacks became their financial bedrock.

A twist of fate at Star City, where all her sons worked, introduced them to the world of fragrances. Eager to create a secure position in the industry, they started to delve into perfume-making with vigor.

“Perfection never comes easy. Our initial attempts were riddled with challenges in achieving the true scents. This pushed us to seek the finest suppliers and industry experts to learn better,” Judy said.

After several months, their constant pursuit bore fruit as they formulated fragrances that their customers loved. With a small amount of capital from her son’s savings, they started with just ten distinct scents, they forged connections with top suppliers to ensure only the best ingredients for their brand.

Facing criticism head-on, Judy said, “We took every feedback to improve our products.” They never let negativity ruin the business they had started, instead used them to further improve their products and continue learning.

The year 2020 presented a new challenge: a global pandemic that made them lose some of their distributors and hindered their operation. Their business disruptions were mitigated, in part, thanks to CARD Bank, a microfinance-oriented rural bank that had been Judy’s financial partner since 2009. “CARD Bank’s loans bridged gaps in our finances, enabling us to innovate and introduce new fragrances despite the challenging times,” Judy shared.

Today, Leviste Perfume Collection offers 107 unique fragrances with a growing distribution network spanning Taguig, Baclaran, Quezon City, and Negros Occidental. They also cultivate their brand presence online that connects them directly to potential customers and distributors.

“If you have the chance to start your own business, do it. Aside from profits, the fact that you also create possible jobs for other people is more than enough motivation to build your own,” Judy said.

The family is still planning to add more perfume scents to their collection, expand to online markets, and hope to find more distributors that help in introducing their brand to broader markets.

“The beauty of perfumes is that they speak to our heart, reminding us of a certain person, time, or memory. Like the lingering scent of freshly picked flowers, may the fragrance of our business success be as long-lasting,” Judy concluded.
